Lake Classifications
Lakes are classified into 3 different types: General Development, Recreational Development and Natural Environment. The primary purpose is to regulate development and to establish setbacks from the ordinary high water mark (OHW) of the lake.
On GD lakes, lots must be a minimum of approximately 1/2 acre and the building setback is typically 75'.
On RD lakes, lots must be a minimum of approximately 1 acre and the building setback is typically 100'.
On NE lakes, lots must be a minimum of approximately 2 acres and the building setback is typically 150'.
One thing to consider, many townships are moving to what are called Comprehensive Development Plans. Therefore within a given township, development standards might vary slightly from the above numbers.
